Tips for High Performing Teams

Ever wondered why some teams soar while others struggle to barely take off? Or why many teams deliver good work but never achieve brilliance? For decades, these puzzles have captivated researchers.

In the early 2000s, a research team from MIT Human Dynamics Laboratory set out to uncover the secret of high-performing teams. Their findings were groundbreaking. They revealed an insight that was not only surprising but pivotal in our understanding of the relationship between communication and teamwork.  But, have we paid enough attention to it?

What was MIT's big reveal? The research team found that communication plays a critical role in building the effective teamwork that leads to high performance. But here's the surprising twist. The key to success lies not in the content of our communication, but  in the way we convey our thoughts, ideas, and emotions ðŸ”‘ Yes, that right. This notion might seem counter-intuitive at first glance. As Professor Sandy Pentland, director of MIT's Human Dynamics Laboratory, observes "It seems almost absurd that how we communicate could be so much more important to success than what we communicate."

Spurred on by this insight, MIT Lab delved deeper into this puzzle. Through a series of ingeniously designed experiments, the Lab confirmed what many others seeking to find the secret to high performing teams had overlooked:

the aspects of communication that form the linchpin of successful teams are tone of voice, energy levels, patterns of engagement, and the subtle cues of body language and gesture.

These elements were identified as the most crucial factor in team success, surpassing all other factors combined such as individual intelligence, personality, skills, and the content of discussions. Really think about this because its profound.

As a voice and communication coach, I'm drawn to a particularly intriguing question: Why has the significance of communication style been so underestimated in team dynamics for so long? In today's world, where leadership spans across business, elite sports, the arts, science, politics, and beyond, are we truly leveraging the insights from MIT's groundbreaking research?

So, what does effective communication look like in high-performing teams, according to these findings?  Let's pull out some of the key characteristics that help create the chemistry for high performance. Here are six you will see in play:

🔺 High Energy and Engagement Levels: In successful teams, energy and engagement levels, both inside and outside the team, are palpable. There's a buzz that's clearly observable. Everyone contributes ideas, shares concerns, and provides feedback without fear of judgement. Energy levels do vary according to circumstances. It's recognised as a finite source but it must be present and managed appropriately to energise the team.

🔺 Equal Participation: Ever been in a meeting where one person does all the talking? Not in successful teams. Here, everyone talks and, perhaps more importantly, listens in roughly equal measure. Contributions are concise and to the point. Discipline is exercised by all.  Every voice is heard and valued.

🔺 Expressive Communication and Face-to-Face Interaction: Teams are attuned to the power of non-verbal cues - head nods, gestures, facial expression, tone of voice, vocal signals and body language are all used to encourage each other to speak, share and participate. There is a high level of expressivity. It's energetic, enthusiastic and gestural.  Individuals face each other when speaking. Face-to-face contact is valued where possible - a phone call is a better option than an email. Members are aware of levels of extraversion and introversion and manage these successfully.

🔺 Peer Connections: While the team leader is important, successful teams go beyond hierarchical structures. Members connect with each other on a personal level, fostering a sense of camaraderie and trust.

🔺 Open Communication Channels: Side conversations within the team are not frowned upon; they're encouraged. Communication flows freely, sparking creativity and collaboration.

🔺 Exploration and Innovation: Successful teams don't confine their interactions to formal meetings. Energy is often at its highest in informal settings. Teams take breaks, explore ideas outside the box, spread ideas around to invite feedback, and bring fresh insights back to the table.

In a world where we often prioritize what is being said over how it's being said, the findings from MIT's Human Dynamics Laboratory serve as a powerful reminder: communication is not just a means of conveying information; the X Factor of successful teams lies in the alchemy of 'the how'.

This is the space where the chemistry of high performance takes place. This special blend of communication techniques - vocal tone, facial expressions, gestures, body language and energy - acts as the switch that can ignite a team's true potential.

So, the next time you step into your next team meeting or collaborative project, I encourage you to pause and reflect on the dynamics at play.  Observe not just the words being exchanged but the energy and engagement they're wrapped in. Embrace the power of active listening, express yourself with clarity, empathy, and enthusiasm. Engage every voice in the room. Remember that every gesture you make, and tone of voice you use, contributes to positive energy and team success.

Now, I invite you to take a moment to think about a recent team interaction. Could the "X Factor" of communication have changed the outcome? Moving forward, how can you apply these insights to elevate your team's performance?

Who knows, you might just unlock the X Factor that propels your team to greatness ðŸ¥‡
