🎤 Rethinking Performative: Where Intention Takes Centre Stage! 🌟

Hey there! 🙌 Let's dive into a thought that's been on my mind. Why is the concept of performing for an audience, aka engaging in 'performative' acts, so often seen as a negative?

Performative behaviour, described as acting with a specific audience in mind to elicit a response, is sometimes seen as ‘putting on a show’ solely for likes or approval whether it be on the business ‘stage’ or on platforms like Insta, TikTok, or even right here. 📸🎥  

But there's more beneath the surface to consider!

Consider this perspective🔍. In my playbook, I'm aligned with Goffman's notion – each of us is a social actor, playing many roles and expressing our uniqueness on life's big stage. We adapt our behaviour to fit different settings or scenes. Goffman called this the conscious presentation of self.

🎭🎩 In the social ‘theatre’ of leadership we engage in a range of performative acts to convey our leadership presence and to connect, persuade, motivate, and inspire others. Because we set out to consciously present the best version of ourselves and use performance techniques to ‘play our part’ does not mean we are are faking it.  To be fake, or insincere or dishonest we would need to have the intention to deceive. So, intention is the Game-Changer. Intention separates authenticity from pretence.

As Shakespeare says “All the world’s a stage’. In the social media world and in the expansive leadership arena, ethical champions work hard at crafting an authentic version of themselves in order to make genuine impact. 🌟✨ Let's nurture and appreciate them.  They are brave to step out from behind a mask.

Picture this: a savvy leader steps into the spotlight, aiming to ignite inspiration, empower, and forge connections. 💡🚀 This authentic leader seeks impact, not empty applause. They face their vulnerability and fears. They absorb the heat.

A leader’s "performative" acts may include personal attire, gestures, smiles, vocal cues, and sound bites. But here’s the thing - genuine intention, matched with exceptional self-presentation and bravery, sets the stage ablaze. 🎤🔥

So let’s check our intention, summon up our courage and hone some performance techniques so we can inspire with authenticity and skill. 🎭🌟
